Pune district is one of the largest and most developed districts of Maharashtra. It stretches from the crest of the Sahyadri hills in the west, with its forts, dams and ghats, to the dry plains of the Bhima and Nira rivers in the east, with their sugar cane fields and farms.
The district has 15 talukas: Pune City and Pimpri Chinchwad, which are city talukas, and Haveli, Mulshi, Maval, Bhor, Rajgad (earlier called Velhe), Junnar, Ambegaon, Khed, Shirur, Daund, Indapur, Baramati and Purandar.
