The hills around Pune are crowned with forts. Many of them are linked with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj: he was born at Shivneri, took his first fort at Torna, ruled from Rajgad for many years and made treaties and fought battles at Purandar and Sinhagad.
In July 2025 UNESCO added twelve Maratha forts to the World Heritage list as the "Maratha Military Landscapes of India". Three of them, Shivneri, Rajgad and Lohagad, are in Pune district.
Most forts make a good one day trek from Pune. The monsoon (June to September) is the most beautiful time, but paths become slippery. Carry water, wear good shoes, start early and come down before dark.
