Rajgad, the king of forts, was the seat of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for many years before he moved his capital to Raigad. The hill was earlier known as Murumbdev. Many important events of the early Maratha kingdom took place here. Rajaram Maharaj was born on Rajgad, and Saibai, the first wife of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, died here.
In 2025 Rajgad became part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Maratha Military Landscapes of India". The taluka in which it stands, earlier called Velhe, was renamed Rajgad after the fort in 2025.
