History

Torna was the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, when he was still a teenager. It is often called the "toran", the doorway, of Swarajya. The fort is also known as Prachandagad, the huge fort, because of its size. Treasure found here is said to have helped pay for the building of nearby Rajgad.

What you can see today

  • The Menghai Devi temple, the deity of the fort.
  • Two long spurs: Budhla Machi and Zunjar Machi, with sharp drops on both sides.
  • Wide views of Rajgad, the Panshet and Gunjavani lakes and the Sahyadri range.

How to reach

The trek starts from Velhe village, which is reached by road from Pune via Nasrapur or Panshet. The climb takes about three hours each way for most people.

Tips for visitors

  • Some parts have rock patches with railings. Go with an experienced group if you are new to trekking.
  • The Zunjar Machi is dangerous in rain and wind. Do not go to the edge.
