The procession

The Manache Ganpati go first, in their fixed order, followed by hundreds of other mandals. The procession often goes on for more than a day.

Dhol tasha pathaks

Pune's dhol tasha pathaks are famous. These groups of young men and women practise for weeks and play huge drums and taashas in perfect rhythm. Many are also known for their tall saffron flags.

Watching the procession

  • The main roads are Laxmi Road, Kumthekar Road, Kelkar Road and Tilak Road in the old city.
  • Traffic is closed in the old city on this day. Use the metro or walk.
  • Crowds are very heavy at night. Keep children close and phones safe.
  • Many mandals now use artificial tanks set up by the Municipal Corporation for immersion, to keep the rivers clean.
