What "Manache" means

Maan means honour. The five Manache Ganpati are the mandals given the honour of leading the visarjan procession on Anant Chaturdashi. They go in a fixed order, and all other mandals follow them.

The five, in order

  1. Kasba Ganpati: the gramdaivat, or guardian deity, of Pune. The temple in Kasba Peth is linked in tradition with Rajmata Jijabai and young Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
  2. Tambdi Jogeshwari: the mandal of the Tambdi Jogeshwari temple in Budhwar Peth. Jogeshwari is the gramdevi, the guardian goddess, of Pune.
  3. Guruji Talim: one of the oldest public mandals, started from a talim (a traditional wrestling school) in the old city. It is known for Hindus and Muslims having founded it together.
  4. Tulshibaug Ganpati: the mandal of the Tulshibaug area, known for its tall and beautiful idol in the heart of the market.
  5. Kesari Wada Ganpati: the Ganpati of Kesari Wada, the home of Lokmanya Tilak and his newspaper Kesari, in Narayan Peth.

Visiting the Manache Ganpati

All five are in the old city, within walking distance of each other. Start at Kasba Ganpati early in the morning and walk through Budhwar Peth and Tulshibaug to Narayan Peth. Evenings are very crowded.
