The garbage and construction debris that had piled up along Technical Airport Road near Lohegaon has been cleared in a joint effort by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Adar Poonawalla team, PMC said on 28 October 2026. Besides making the area cleaner, the work helps reduce the risk of birds near Pune airport.

Six sanitation workers and a garbage van

PMC removed the debris from the roadside and has posted six sanitation workers permanently for regular garbage collection there. The Adar Poonawalla team has given a garbage collection vehicle that will serve the stretch regularly.

"Waste to Wonder"

Under a "Waste to Wonder" idea, stones were placed along the road edge and painted in bright colours, saplings were planted in old iron drums, and waste tyres were painted and reused as planters. One spot at Khese Park, Lohegaon, which was a heap of garbage against a wall in July, now has a stack of painted tyres.

Why it matters for flights

Open garbage draws birds looking for food, and birds near an airport are a danger to planes during take-off and landing. Regular cleaning and collection should keep birds away from this stretch beside the airport.

Who worked on it

The work was coordinated by Asha Raut, Deputy Commissioner, PMC Zone 1; Sanjay Pol, Assistant Commissioner, Nagar Road ward office; senior health inspectors Milind Khandode and Sunil Gholve; health inspectors Sanjay Bhusare and Gopalkrishna Naidu; Malhar Karwande, CEO, Farooq Bagi and Satish Admane of the Adar Poonawalla team; and Wing Commander Shalini Thakur and Arundhati Kurtadikar of the Air Force team.

PMC has asked people not to throw garbage in public places and to help keep Technical Airport Road clean.
