Fire safety tips for Diwali at home
With Diwali around the corner, these simple steps can help keep homes and housing societies in Pune safe:
- Burst crackers only in open spaces, away from parked vehicles, dry leaves and building entrances. Never inside the house or in staircases.
- Keep a bucket of water or sand ready when bursting crackers, and let children do it only with an adult beside them.
- Wear cotton clothes near diyas and crackers. Loose synthetic clothes catch fire easily.
- Keep diyas and candles away from curtains, rangoli powder heaps, paper decorations and wooden furniture.
- Do not overload one socket with many lighting strings. Switch off decorative lights when you go out or go to sleep.
- Housing societies should check that fire extinguishers are filled and not past their expiry date, and that staircases and exits are not blocked.
- In case of fire, call the fire brigade on 101 or the national emergency number 112. Leave by the stairs, never the lift.
