Pune may get its first ropeway. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed a ropeway from Peshwe Park at Sarasbaug to Parvati hill, and its standing committee has approved the appointment of a project management consultant to take the plan forward.

The project is at the planning stage. No construction work has started and no opening date has been announced.

The plan at a glance

  • Route: Peshwe Park (Sarasbaug) to Parvati
  • Length: about 750 metres
  • Ride time: about 2.5 minutes
  • Cabins: 22, each for 8 passengers
  • Towers: 5, between 12 and 40 metres high
  • Capacity: about 1,500 passengers per hour in each direction

Today, visitors reach the Parvati temples by climbing more than a hundred stone steps. A ropeway would make the hill easier to visit for senior citizens and families, and link two of the city's best-known spots.

What the consultant will do

PMC has said it does not have in-house electrical and mechanical experts for a ropeway, so the consultant will handle the work from planning to the work order:

  • prepare the detailed project report (DPR)
  • check whether the project is technically and financially workable
  • find out which government permissions are needed
  • run the tender process

PMC will decide whether to go ahead after the consultant's report.

Cost and funding

PMC's 2026-27 budget has set aside ₹1 crore for the project. The consultant's fee will be 1.27% of the project cost, or at least ₹2.54 crore, plus GST. The total cost of the ropeway is not known yet. PMC is studying whether it can be built through a public-private partnership, for example the design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) model.
