IIT Madras has handed over 24 made-in-India YD One wheelchairs to the Artificial Limb Centre (ALC) and Command Hospital (Southern Command) in Pune, for serving soldiers, veterans and other eligible users.
About the YD One
The YD One is an ultra-lightweight "active" wheelchair, which the user can push and steer on their own instead of depending on a helper. It was designed with the help of wheelchair users at IIT Madras's TTK Centre for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2), and is made by Thryv Mobility, a company started at IIT Madras. The programme is supported by Fiserv under its CSR work.
100 wheelchairs for the Armed Forces
With this batch, 49 of the planned 100 wheelchairs have been delivered. The first 25 went to the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in New Delhi in June 2026.
Brigadier C. N. Satish, Commandant of the ALC, said a wheelchair means freedom, independence and dignity, not just mobility. The Artificial Limb Centre in Pune was set up in 1944.
