History

In 1900 a few young cricketers in Pune started a club of their own to promote cricket and other sports. They called it the Poona Young Cricketers' Hindu Gymkhana, and it is known today as PYC Hindu Gymkhana, or simply PYC.

The late Bapat Guruji of Hujurpaga School helped the young club take up wrestling, mallakhamb and hockey as well as cricket. The pavilion on Bhandarkar Road, still the heart of the club, was built in 1906.

PYC has a special place in Indian cricket. Prof. D. B. Deodhar, remembered as the "Cricket Maharshi", was a pillar of the club in its early years, and great players such as C. K. Naidu, D. B. Deodhar and Vijay Hazare trained here.
