About PMC
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) looks after the city of Pune: its roads, water, cleanliness, health, schools, gardens and much more. Pune got its first municipality in 1858, and it became a Municipal Corporation on 15 February 1950. In 2025 PMC completed 75 years as a corporation.
How big is PMC?
The city has grown a great deal. In 2017, 11 villages on the edge of Pune joined the corporation, and in June 2021 another 23 villages joined, taking its area to over 500 square kilometres. At the 2011 census, the city had about 31.24 lakh people, and the number has grown a lot since, with the new villages and the fast-growing suburbs. This growth keeps raising the demand for roads, water and other services.
