Pune celebrates two Eids every year. Ramzan Eid, or Eid-ul-Fitr, comes at the end of the holy month of Ramzan, and Bakri Eid, or Eid-ul-Adha, about seventy days later. Both follow the Islamic moon calendar, so their dates move about eleven days earlier each year and are fixed only when the moon is sighted.
The month of Ramzan
During Ramzan, people fast from dawn to sunset. In the evenings, families break the fast at iftar with dates and fruit, and the lanes near the mosques in areas such as Kondhwa, Camp and Bhavani Peth fill with food stalls selling kebabs, malpua, phirni and sweets. Punekars of every community go out to enjoy the food.
Ramzan Eid (Eid-ul-Fitr)
Eid begins with the morning namaz. The biggest gathering in Pune is at the Eidgah at Golibar Maidan, and Eid prayers are also held at Eidgahs and mosques across the city and Pimpri Chinchwad. After the namaz, people hug and say "Eid Mubarak", wear new clothes, give eidi to children and visit friends and neighbours, who are served sheer khurma, a sweet milk dish with vermicelli and dry fruit.
Bakri Eid (Eid-ul-Adha)
Bakri Eid also begins with the morning namaz at the Eidgahs. It remembers the faith of Prophet Ibrahim. Families who can afford it offer qurbani and share the meat with relatives, neighbours and people in need, and the day is spent with family and festive food.
On both Eids, Pune traffic police usually change traffic around Golibar Maidan in the morning during the namaz. Watch for their notice a day before.
