The citizens of Pune city gathered for a Plogathon for a fit and clean Pune on the World Environment Day in its 3rd consecutive year for which 85,000 citizens registered online on Sunday at Baba Bhide Bridge. The Pune Plogathon was held at 20 different zones of Pune along 134 routes covering about 315 Sq. km.

More than 1.5 lakh people participated in the citywide Plogathon. They collected 34,477 Kg of dry waste including 29,870 Kg of lattice waste, 753 Kg of e-waste, and 3,854b Kg of other dry waste. The event set a record for the largest Plogathon in the ‘Asia book of record’. Some travel enthusiasts also joined the forest department to clean the hills, which was conducted at Hanuman Hill, Mhatoba Hill, Vetal Hill, Sinhgad hill, etc.

This initiative has been taken by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in collaboration with the Counsel General of Sweden, Business Sweden, and Sweden alumni. They aimed for an Asia Book and India Book of Records for the participation of over 1,00,000 citizens.

MP Supriya Sule, who also participated, said, “People should stop using plastic now. Instead of that, use cloth bags and always carry your water bottle of steel as plastic bottles will create more pollution”.

Various organizations, Medical staff, NGOs, corporate companies, college students, and many others participated in the campaign.

Also present on the occasion were Counsel General of Sweden H.E. Anna Lekvall, PMC Commissioner Vikram Kumar, Pranati Shroff, Founder of ‘Sprout’, and Ankita JP Shroff, Sustain and Save.

Anna said, “As today is World Environment Day, we should always support and celebrate the engagement for the environment and create more awareness. Sweden is very committed to supporting the environment and planet for climate change, for plastic pollution that’s why I am in India, Pune has really shown his efforts today”.

A teenager Shivam Saksena from Pune Ploggers said, “The concept of Plogging was first introduced by Pune Ploggers which started in 2018 by Vivek Gaurav. We adopted the stretch of Mula-Mutha river, where we plog every weekend.”
