  • Organized parents doctors interactive session where parents shared the challenging journeys of their parenthood and bringing up their preterm babies
  • The event witnessed the launch of the book titled ‘Journey of Prematurity – Parental Guide’

Bangalore, November 18, 2021: To commemorate World Prematurity Day, Aster Women and Children Hospital, Whitefield organized an interactive educational program for parents to raise awareness on preterm birth. The program focused on providing the necessary guidance and answers to the questions of new parents addressing the health issues that could arise due to early births. Over 50 parents took part in the interactive session and shared the challenging journeys of their parenthood and bringing up their preterm babies.

As part of the program, to make a difference in the lives of the newborns and their parents, Aster Women and Children Hospital in association with Himalaya Wellness Company launched a book titled ‘Journey of Prematurity– Parental Guide’. Authored by Dr. Lathiesh Kumar Kambham, Lead Neonatology, Consultant – Paediatrics and Neonatology, Aster Women and Children Hospital, Co-Authored by Dr. Srinivasa Murthy C L, Lead Paediatrics, Consultant – Paediatrics and Neonatology, Aster Women and Children Hospital and edited by Dr. Chetan Ginigeri, Lead Consultant – Paediatrics & Paediatric Intensive Care, Aster Women, and Children Hospital.

The book provides complete guidance to the parents of preterm babies. The comprehensive book aims to revolutionize preterm care for parents as it gives insights into the several concerns related to prematurity that parents usually have. It also provides easy-to-follow information which they can follow to keep a check on their baby’s frequently changing condition and gives insights into the NICU setup, how doctors treat and nurture their little ones, and guidelines to care for the baby post-discharge.

Dr. Lathiesh Kumar Kambham, Lead Neonatology, Consultant – Paediatrics and Neonatology, Aster Women and Children Hospital said: “Concerns about prematurity are not just about the short term. In some cases, complexities can be long-term and can last up to 18 years of age. When talking to doctors, parents usually lose track because of medical terminologies and technical terms. This often makes them distressed and worried as they have a lot of questions when their baby is born prematurely. At times when doctors aren’t available to ease their worries, having a self-guiding book can be of great help.  Hence, with this book, we aim to explain things in a simplified manner to all parents.”

Appropriate care has to be taken during childbirth and in the postnatal and antenatal periods for every mother and baby. Speaking on the need for neonatal care, Dr. Nitish Shetty, Regional Director, Aster Hospitals, Karnataka and Maharashtra Cluster said, “According to the World Health Organisation, every year, an estimated 15 million babies are born preterm. Despite substantial progress made globally, sixty percent of the world’s premature births continue to occur in India, making preterm birth complications, a leading cause of death among children under 5 years of age in the country. Premature babies need advanced neonatal care for them to survive and to survive without a disability, they need to be delivered in a place with advanced neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) that have the expertise to cater to such babies. This requires teamwork, expertise, and the best possible technology to assist with care. With this book, we hope to help parents ease their concerns on coping with having a preterm baby.”

Emphasizing the need for awareness on preterm care, Mr. Shiv Kumar Singh – General Manager, BabyCare Marketing, Himalaya Wellness Company said, “Himalaya understands that babies need special care and we are delighted to be a stakeholder in building this shared vision with such a renowned child specialist for the health and wellness of preterm babies. As the most trusted and recommended baby care brand Himalaya BabyCare is committed to the health and wellness of babies and children. With the launch of this book on World Prematurity Day, we aim to bring attention to the extra care of preterm babies and their families. Besides, as a part of our baby and childcare initiatives, we are soon releasing a 28 videos series on child safety and 11 booklets on childcare.”

Bangalore, 15th November 2021: On the occasion of Children’s Day, Aster Hospitals in India, as a part of Aster Volunteers Global CSR initiative has launched the ‘Second Life- Because Little Lives Matter initiative. The year-long initiative is aimed at supporting the medical treatment of disadvantaged children, where the initial aim is to help treat at least 100 children below the age of 12 years by providing free pediatric surgeries. The initiative extends help to deserving children who are being treated across Aster Hospitals based in 5 States in India.

This includes common childhood surgeries such as appendicitis, intussusception, empyema and paediatric urology surgeries as well as complex clinical surgeries including bone marrow transplant, liver transplants, heart surgeries, etc. Dr. Nitish Shetty, Regional Director, Aster Hospitals, Karnataka and Maharashtra Cluster, Mr. Farhan Yasin, Regional Director, Aster Hospitals – Kerala & Oman Cluster and Mr Devanand KT, Regional CEO, Aster Hospitals – Telangana & Andhra Pradesh Cluster were present at the launch of the campaign in Bangalore, today.

The treatment will be funded by Aster DM Foundation or with the support of philanthropists / NGOs. A criterion has been established by the foundation to identify the eligibility of cases for the program; these will be assessed based on the socio-economic status and BPL category as well as the medical outcome of the child prior to commencement of selection and subsequent treatment. Furthermore, a 24X7 multi-lingual helpline number has been set up at Calicut to manage inquiries, the helpline can be accessed by dialing +91 9633620660.

Speaking on the initiative Dr Azad Moopen, Founder Chairman and Managing Director, Aster DM Healthcare said, “In India, where a significant segment of the population still remains below the poverty line, many families with an ailing child struggle to afford the advanced surgery needed to save the lives of their little ones. In most cases, paediatric organ transplants, bone-marrow transplants, cardiac surgeries or even common surgeries can not only give young children a second shot at a better life but also save an entire family from falling into the depths of despair. While our Aster Hospitals in India, based in the 5 States, have emerged as Centres of Excellence in advanced paediatric care and surgeries and our doctors have been known to set global benchmarks in advanced surgical interventions, we sincerely hope that with this effort, we are able to provide a second chance to young children to live their lives to the fullest and achieve their dreams.”

Dr Nitish Shetty, Regional Director, Aster Hospitals, Karnataka and Maharashtra Cluster added, “The launch of the Second Life Initiative is to structure a change that will eventually have a positive impact on the lives of disadvantaged children from a long-term perspective. We aim to leverage the inherent and individual strengths of several of our hospitals to fulfil and deliver on these clinical interventions. At Aster, it is our motto to bring great healthcare within the reach of all individuals, our highly experienced experts at Aster Hospital’s will be dedicating a minimum of 10% of their man-hours to help these children and give them a well-deserved second chance at life”.

Bengaluru, 13 May 2021: To recognize the phenomenal contribution of nurses to the healthcare delivery system across the world, Aster DM Healthcare has launched the Aster Guardian Global Nursing Award. This is all the more relevant in the current scenario as they continue to play a pivotal role in delivering care despite the challenges produced by the Covid-19 pandemic, taking care of patients worldwide and risking their lives.

The initiative invites nurses from across the world to apply for the award by submitting nominations for their work on the mentioned site either directly or by others with citations. The start date for the application will be announced shortly.

“Nurses form the backbone of healthcare and play the most critical role in patient care, aiding recovery through professional and personal care. They are the real guardians for the patients and aid the entire recovery process. Many of them put in committed and passionate service to their patients despite the risk involved and the extended hours they have to work in situations like the current pandemic. They put their patients before their families and loved ones to fulfill their duty. Many times this is not recognized or compensated.  Through Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award, we aim to bring their sacrifices and commitment to light and celebrate them globally,” said Dr. Azad Moopen, Founder Chairman and Managing Director of Aster DM Healthcare.

The initiative will start receiving applications shortly region-wise namely Asia, Africa, Middle East, Europe, USA, Canada, South America, Australia among others. The final Aster Guardian Global Nursing Award winner will be announced on 12th May- International Nurses Day in 2022. Apart from the substantial First Prize of US $ 250,000, the 9 finalists will also be presented with monetary prizes and awards.

Bangalore, January 12, 2021: A 62-year-old, senior citizen from Tamil Nadu diagnosed with Interstitial lung disease (ILD) and a 40-year-old congenital heart patient from Jharkhand received a new lease of life, thanks to the joint efforts of a team of doctors at Aster Hospitals, Bangalore and KIMS Hospitals, Hyderabad who conducted the challenging bilateral lung transplant and combined heart and lung transplant procedures to save the life of these patients.

Mr. Pawan Kumar Singh, a 40-year-old patient from Jharkhand, had a history of congenital heart disease with significant structural defects and had developed severe pulmonary hypertension which had made him oxygen dependent with poor quality of life. Despite optimal medical management, his condition continued to deteriorate due to which he had to be admitted to the hospital multiple times.

In other cases, a 62-year-old, Mr. Margabandhu, had ILD and despite optimal medical management his fibrosis continued to progress. He was on oxygen dependence with severe limitation of physical activities.

Explaining about the challenges and complexities involved in both the cases, Dr. Sandeep Attawar, Chair & Director of Thoracic organ transplants and Assist devices at KIMS Heart & Lung Transplant Institute, said: “Both the patient were listed for transplant at Aster CMI Hospital Bengaluru in September 2020 and were transplanted in December 2020 once matching organ was available. This patient had to wait a bit longer for the organ due to the ongoing COVID Pandemic. Both the surgeries were successful and the patients are now discharged from the hospital and slowly getting back to normal life. Both the recipient can go back to their normal life in around three months time”.

Dr. Sandeep Attawar is one of the most experienced hearts and lung transplant surgeons in the country. A veteran in the field of transplant surgeries with over 24-years’ experience, Dr. Attawar has to date performed over 12,000 heart surgeries and has over 250 transplant surgeries for lungs, heart, and artificial heart implants (LVAD) to his credit.

Sharing his views, Dr. Pavan Yadav, Consultant Interventional Pulmonology, Sleep Medicine and Lung transplantation, Aster Hospitals, Bangalore, said: “The successful double lung transplant and a combined heart and lung transplant during the Covid-19 pandemic is another feather in our hospital’s transplant program’s cap. Conducting a transplant surgery during a pandemic has many medical and logistic challenges. We adhered to strict protocols and mandates to ensure the safety of recipients, family members, and our team while conducting these transplants. Both the patients are stable and are recovering well at their respective homes.”

Thanking the doctors for saving his brother’s life, Ashish Singh, brother of Mr. Pawan Kumar Singh said: “My brother was diagnosed with hypersensitivity in the lungs in 2017 and with time, his condition started deteriorating further and he had to be put on a lung support machine. His life took a complete U-turn when he had developed severe pulmonary hypertension and he became dependent on oxygen support throughout the day. After suffering from the condition for several years, it was in 2019 that we got to know about the combined heart and lung transplant which could provide a solution to my brother’s condition and we were then referred to Aster Hospitals, Bangalore for transplant evaluation. We are extremely thankful to the doctors for saving my brother’s life and providing him a new ray of hope to start afresh in the New Year.”

Speaking on the collaboration Dr. Nitish Shetty, CEO, Aster Hospitals, Bangalore said, “Collaboration is important to the healthcare system as it has the potential to allow for more comprehensive patient care through a combination of synergies and expertise and is also essential in meeting ongoing healthcare challenges in transplants. Such association will help in improving medical care standards and make healthcare affordable & accessible for everyone across the country. The collaboration between hospitals will also drive research into complex medical domains and the best solutions would be forthcoming from such a collaborative approach.”

Bangalore, 15th December 2020: On the occasion of Aster DM Healthcare’s 34th Foundation Day, the organization has announced to donate 10,000 medical investigations in the next 1 year across India and GCC. The initiative, to be run by Aster Volunteers, the CSR arm of the organization, tackles the immediate need faced by many patients, underprivileged or under financial distress, in accessing much-needed medical investigation which would help them seek proper diagnosis and accurate treatment, but are deterred by high costs. This often leads to patients avoiding seeking the needed medical attention or late-stage diagnosis when the disease would have progressed to serious complications.

Speaking on the initiative Dr Azad Moopen, Founder Chairman and Managing Director of Aster DM Healthcare said, ‘‘We often come across many patients who require expensive investigations like CT Scans and MRIs for diagnosis of serious illnesses. Unfortunately, some of them are unable to carry out the investigations due to financial constraints. The sad part is that they could have been saved by a timely investigation with better treatment. This initiative will help such patients by providing high-end investigations free of cost through Aster Volunteers.’’

The medical investigations to be provided include MRI and CT Scan procedures. A detailed list of the medical investigations to be provided by Aster Hospitals in India and GCC can be found on the Aster Freein website along with the details of the application process. Any needy patient seeking to avail an investigation can reach out to the respective facility in each country and also apply on the website, along with supporting documents.
