In a heart-warming display of solidarity and awareness, 500 optometric students and ophthalmologists from across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh joined forces to create 2024 origami butterflies, symbolizing growth & transformation for individuals with autism. The unique initiative, organized by Sankara Eye Hospital and Sankara College of Optometry, aimed to shed light on the connection between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and its visual impact.

“The Milestone Early Intervention Clinic, is equipped with specialised equipment and trained optometrists to cater to the needs of children with autism spectrum. 24% of children we saw at the clinic were able to demonstrate marked improvement with curated binocular vision therapy. To increase acceptance of children with autism spectrum and advocate for a comprehensive eye examination which can enhance their ability to flourish, we came up with this idea of showcasing a butterfly through origami” said Dr. Kaushik Murali, President Medical Administration, Quality And Education, Sankara Eye Foundation India.

Launching the initiative, Poornima Sankar, Founder Suryaforlife and Bharatanatyam Artist, who has been a supporter of the milestone clinic , “ Healthcare workers continue to contribute to society. Today’s activity would help us be empathetic. Each butterfly we made is different and may not be perfect , but when it comes together it reflects how every small act adds up to a large impact. I am grateful to the opportunity I have being associated with Sankara Eye Hospital to give back to society”

“With each one of us making a butterfly, we can appreciate that it takes a collaborative effort of optometrists, ophthalmologists and occupational therapists to work with a child presenting with autism spectrum to achieve their full potential in education, work and in their hobbies. This creative that”, shared Hiral Divyansh , Occupational Therapist & Founder Rise & Shine.

Early diagnosis and intervention strategies are crucial in ensuring proper visual health for individuals with autism. ASD not only influences individual behaviour but also has a substantial impact on the visual system. Through this distinct initiative, participants sought to raise awareness & committed to propagate the importance of understanding and addressing visual challenges faced by individuals on the autism spectrum.

Dr. Keni Ravish Rajiv, Consultant Neurologist & Epileptologist, Aster RV Hospital

Peripheral neuropathy, also known as nerve damage, is a common condition that affects everybody at some point in their life and is characterized by the hallmark symptoms of tingling, numbness, pain, and muscular weakness.

Several types of nerve injury fall under the umbrella category of neuropathy. The number of affected nerves can be used to classify all neuropathies; mononeuropathies impact only one nerve, whereas polyneuropathies affect many. They are further divided into categories based on the kind of nerves (motor, sensory, or autonomic) they mostly influence.

Basics of peripheral neuropathy

Your peripheral nervous system (PNS) is a critical component of almost every bodily function, from sensory perception and voluntary motor activities like muscle contraction to autonomic processes like digestion, body temperature control, heart rate, and blood pressure.

Damaged peripheral nerves make it difficult for them to send and receive complete, coherent messages to and from your central nervous system. Physical trauma, an underlying medical condition, a vitamin deficiency, or exposure to poisonous substances are just a few of the many causes of harm.

These nerves may deliver messages that aren’t correct, like static on a phone line, or they may give signals that are warped, like a wavering television image. They might even completely stop signaling, like a damaged line. In injury-induced neuropathy, nerve damage can appear suddenly, as is frequently the case, or it can appear gradually and worsen over time, as is frequently the case with diabetic neuropathy.

Forms of neuropathy and symptoms:

Although the type and degree of the symptoms that neuropathy causes are frequently used to characterize it, the first classification of neuropathy is based on how many nerves it affects. There are two primary categories of neuropathy:

Mononeuropathy

One nerve or set of nerves is affected by mononeuropathy. This type of neuropathy can develop from prolonged nerve pressure brought on by spending too much time sitting in a chair or lying in bed, however, it is frequently brought on by physical trauma or injury.

Mononeuropathy can also occur as a result of persistent or repetitive movements, local compression, and chronic inflammation. The most prevalent type of mononeuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, generally manifests in just this way.

Symptoms typically manifest locally and widely. When it affects the peroneal nerve below your knee, you may have lower limb weakness that makes it difficult to lift your foot. When it affects the ulnar nerve in your elbow, you may suffer numbness in your elbow and tingling in your ring and pinky fingers radiating from your elbow.

Polyneuropathy

The majority of the time, neuropathy affects many nerves and nerve types, leading to extensive peripheral nervous system dysfunction. This disorder, sometimes referred to as polyneuropathy, typically develops when several peripheral nerves break down simultaneously due to an underlying medical condition.

Depending on the kind, location, and extent of the affected nerves, polyneuropathy symptoms can range from moderate and sporadic to severe and ongoing. Your reflexes and movement might be impacted by injury to your motor nerves, whereas your sensations and sense of balance can be impacted by damage to your sensory nerves.

An erratic heartbeat, excessive perspiration, bowel and bladder issues, enduring gastrointestinal symptoms, and abrupt blood pressure swings that make you feel dizzy or lightheaded are all indicators of autonomic nerve injury.

Options for treating neuropathy

As the majority of peripheral neuropathies are incurable or irreversible, treatment focuses on slowing or halting disease development and delivering long-lasting symptom relief so you can resume your normal, active lifestyle.

Keep your underlying medical condition under control if it’s diabetes that’s the root of your problem if you want to avoid more nerve damage.

The majority of neuropathy cases react effectively to specific lifestyle adjustments; many patients discover that maintaining an active lifestyle, eating a healthy diet, and decreasing weight can all significantly reduce the severity of their neuropathy symptoms. Mechanical devices like braces, occupational therapy, and physical therapy are all beneficial.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) on Thursday announced the scientific completion of India’s first locally made Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus (qHPV) vaccine against Cervical Cancer.

“It makes us very happy that our daughters and granddaughters will now be able to get this much-awaited vaccine,” Dr. N K Arora, Chairperson of the COVID working group, National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI) said.

It is very effective and prevents cervical cancer because, in 85% to 90% of cases, cervical cancer is because of this particular virus and this vaccine is against those viruses. So, if we give it to our young children and daughters, they are protected from the infection, and consequently probably 30 years later, cancer does not occur.

This is one of the last major vaccines to be introduced. In fact, this is one of the last vaccines that will be launched in the program. Now, Indian vaccines will be available and we hope that they will be launched in the National Immunisation program for 9-14-year-old girls.

“It is likely to be priced between ₹200 and ₹400, But we will finalize it after discussing it with the government of India. Once our manufacturing starts, we will be able to talk more about it” Pune’s Serum Institute of India’s (SII) chief executive officer Adar Poonawalla said on Thursday.

Female Cyclist From Pune Is All Set To Make A Guinness World Record For Cycling From Leh To Manali

Preeti Maske, a 45-year-old female cyclist from Pune is all set to attempt another Guinness world record from Leh to Manali 480 km in 60 hours. This is at 3600 meters (above sea level) high altitude gruesome attempt by the very first women cyclist.

The climb on the passes of various peaks will be a total elevation gain of 8000 meters from Leh to Manali. In other words, she will be almost equal to climbing Mount Everest (8448 meters).

At one stage of Preeti’s life, her whole life changed due to illness, but she did not waver from it. Instead, she decided to overcome the illness and started cycling as a way to stay healthy and as a form of exercise. Over time, her passion for cycling became obsessive and she gradually climbed to the top of the new record. Now with new hope, they are setting out to set a new world record.

Preeti has been cycling for the last six years. Her health had deteriorated a few years ago. To overcome her illness, she started cycling and running in 2017. After that, she developed a passion for cycling, and from that, she started traveling to different places all over India. Now Preeti will complete the 480 km journey from Leh to Manali by bicycle in 60 to 70 hours. For this, they will leave Pune for Leh on June 13.

Preeti informed that “The most challenging part of Leh-Manali is sleep deprivation and the second challenge will be to manage extreme low temperatures. We are constantly checking the temperatures of Leh and Manali. It is -5C to -10C.”

“I will be mostly on a high protein liquid diet for quick & continuous energy replenishment, it becomes tougher for a vegetarian like me”, added Preeti.

Preeti’s cycling journey will start on June 22 and will be recorded globally. According to the information, Preeti will dedicate the ‘Leh to Manali’ cycle journey to the Border Road Organization. Preeti will be fully dependent on her crew of 6 people to support her nutrition and hydration in a continuous ride with a break of a max of 2-3 hours in 24 clock hours.

Preeti said, “I was very ill between 2015 and 2017. To get out of it, I started cycling in February 2017. In December 2019, 19 cyclists from all over the country were selected for the ‘Kashmir to Kanyakumari’ cycle journey (3,773 km), including me. This is how the journey continues after that.”

“One has to play at least one sport in their lives. The joy that comes from it is indescribable. The transformation from a mere passion for the sport to a source of income is unspeakable. Not only will hobbies and sports become a business for everyone, but the satisfaction that comes from it will be fundamental,” she added further.

Preeti has several records in her name. The last was from Srinagar-Leh-Khardungla; she completed it in 5 days last year. Preeti also holds the record for fastest women cyclist on Golden Quadrilateral (6000 km) for the route Pune- Chennai – Kolkata- Delhi – Mumbai – Pune, and Kashmir to Kanyakumari (4500 km).

Amid loud cheers from friends, family, colleagues, and admirers, Jugal Rathi completed 75 rounds of the Deccan Gymkhana as he completed as many years on this planet and World Environment Day on June 5.

The tradition started 16 years ago. Rathi, a chartered accountant, and well-known activist realized that there can be more to birthdays than parties and cakes. A long-time member of the Deccan Gymkhana, he decided in 2007 that he will try to run as many rounds as the number of years he has completed, and one extra round to mark the beginning of the next year.

The sunny, bright day reflected in the optimism from conversations, laughter, and a sense of community all around. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, only 50 people were allowed at a time on the track this year. It did not deter friends and fellow athletes from lending their support and encouragement from the stands after the completion of every round.

Rathi’s passions include spreading awareness about the environment through running, a part of his obsession for seeking an improvement in Pune’s public transport. One of Rathi’s biggest concerns has been the growing number of private vehicles in the city. To motivate people to use alternative means of transportation, he organized a virtual challenge where people could log the number of kilometers they ran, walked, used the bus, or cycled.

The challenge aimed to log a total of 7,500 kilometers before June 5 but managed to log more than 10,000 km after receiving overwhelming participation from the people. He has also been an important advocate for increasing the number of buses in Pune and has closely worked with the Pune Municipal Corporation. He has sold off his personal vehicle and prefers cycling or taking the bus instead.

And sure enough, Rathi’s ability to connect with people is unmissable. Not only did he interact with everyone on the track with him, but he also acknowledged everyone who came to support him talking and clicking pictures with them like old pals.

  • An increasing trend was observed among patients owing to the long waiting period in OPDs despite taking prior appointments

Mumbai, January 19th, 2022: Godrej & Boyce, the flagship company of the Godrej Group, announced that its business Godrej Interio, India’s leading furniture solutions brand, in-home, and institutional segments, launched a trend report “Elements of a Healing Environment. The report revealed several interesting insights on the concerns of patients, the changing face of healthcare infrastructure, and the health concerns of doctors and nurses. It further states that only when a human-centric care model is approached, can healthcare spaces become more comfortable and receptive for patients, their families, and healthcare providers such as nurses, doctors, etc.

The report states that on average, patients wait for 30–35 minutes in the Out-Patients Department (OPD) despite having a prior appointment. To alleviate the stress of patients and families that visit hospitals, the white paper has shared multiple solutions like the provision of Wi-Fi to keep patients occupied as they wait their turn, simple design elements like light-colored walls, comfortable and easily cleanable hospital furniture, along with wide windows that allow natural light. These methods reduce stress levels in not only patients but also the hospital staff thus enabling a better experience and promoting overall wellbeing.

The report further states that Nursing personnel has been identified as a high-risk group with 90% of nurses suffering from one or more pain-related issues. Most of these are owing to musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) which are currently recognized as common occupational injuries. Doctors and nurses have long shifts working on their feet or in uncomfortable positions. It is crucial that medical facilities think about ergonomics for their staff’s well-being that will enable better patient care.

Sameer Joshi, Associate Vice President, Marketing (B2B), Godrej Interior said The Indian healthcare industry is predicted to grow by 16–17% CAGR, driven by better awareness, higher incomes, lifestyle diseases, and access to insurance. This is bolstered by the growing number of well-trained medical professionals and increased healthcare investments by the Government. At Godrej Interio, we are led by a consumer-centric approach, keeping in mind both patients as well as hospital staff, thus being recognized as a preferred solutions provider for the healthcare industry. This year, we aim to grow our healthcare business by 60-70%. We have invested over 10% of our healthcare business turnover to meet the demands of this sector.”

Given the current scenario, the study also found that 20% of respondents preferred teleconsultation to save time and avoid travel, especially in case of minor ailments. This leads to investing in future technology such as video conferencing technology to enable patients to communicate with their loved ones, especially in isolated areas and inpatient environments, as well as robots for dispensing and delivering equipment.

About Godrej Interio:
