By Rusen Kumar-

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a serious and unprecedented impact across the economies and society in general, particularly in India. 2021 was different in every aspect and held more than its fair share of challenges. 2021 was a year where India demonstrated that our people come first – when lives depended on ensuring taking all necessary precautions. India implemented numerous initiatives towards ensuring the health, well-being, and safety of our people.

India reeled under the new coronavirus pandemic situation that disrupted our collective sense of the normal, and also witnessed a crisis of unprecedented nature and effect. The harsh situation continues to remain serious, and therefore, we should continue to support our people and our communities.

However, India also saw the best of human nature at this time. India continually witnesses magnificent examples of resilience. India’s collective resolve to stand with communities, to inspire hope and healing. India is determined to come out stronger from this pandemic than we have ever been. As a sustainable and responsible India, everything we do is to inspire by a deep sense of purpose.

Our collective values have held us in good stead at this time, and they are the foundation on which we have built our success and results. It is heartening to see India rise to the challenge and continue to make a positive impact on the lives of people. In India, the pandemic situation continues to remain serious, and therefore, we continue to support our people and our communities.

India proved the solidity of the Covid-19 strategy. This has helped India quickly adapt to new ways of being stronger together and gain greater momentum addressing key challenges. Government responses in the year 2022 continue to stand robust, both economic and in terms of meeting and exceeding people’s expectations.

India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 150.61 Cr on January 8, 2022. India is accelerating the pace and expanding the scope of COVID-19 vaccination throughout the country. The vaccination drive has been ramped up through the availability of enough vaccines, advanced visibility of vaccine availability for enabling better planning and streamlining the vibrant vaccine supply chain.

We need to have put in place multiple task forces for people’s hospitalization, medication, and vaccination. We need to expand the scope of our employee benefits from medical and term insurance to provide for the families of employees we lost to this terrible virus. Throughout this challenging period, India responded very quickly to prioritize the health and safety of our people and continued to provide a reliable supply of medicines, vaccination, and necessary help to the patients across the country.

As part of the nationwide vaccination drive, India has given COVID Vaccines free of cost to people. In the new phase of the universalization of the COVID-19 vaccination drive, India will procure and supply (free of cost) 75% of the vaccines being produced by the manufacturers in the country to various states.

The Indian business cemented its strength with its persistent effort to enhance profitability by improving upon the overall quality of the business. During the year 2022, India needs to continually launch new initiatives and economic relief to Covid-19 affected people and businesses. While India has performed well in the year 2021, It has started 2022 on an optimistic note.

People, civil society, and businesses, who collectively enable India to create value by helping each other, will keep focusing on India’s strategic priorities and leveraging their strengths. Trust, confidence, and support to government efforts toward Covid-19 are key for overcoming challenges. Notwithstanding the challenges of the times, Indian businesses should continue to think from the heart and act with a high head – to care for people, covid-19 patients, and communities.

Shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic, the unexpected and overwhelming year of 2021 that went by affected every aspect of our lives. In the face of this unprecedented volatility, India made proactive investments in people, processes, operations, and technologies that tackle the Covid-19, so that India could deliver strong operational performance throughout the year and into the 2022 and future.

Throughout 2021, India worked hard to strengthen the long-term value of people and business, to emerge stronger coming out of the pandemic. This has been possible due to the hard work, perseverance, and commitment of India’s people. Our priority for the year 2022 will remain to ensure the health and safety of our people. Let’s put in place extensive measures to protect our people and their families, yet sadly we lost several of our valued fellow citizens.

All responsible corporate citizens must continue to extend all forms of support to COVID-19 relief efforts. In a year of turmoil, Indian corporations should be proud and humbled to have been able to serve our communities and needy people.

The year 2021 was a year that showed us the true capability that India has, and how much more we can do in 2022. I am very excited about the opportunities ahead for our people and business.

Mumbai, December 7, 2021: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased respiratory issues leading to partially or in some cases, fully damaged lungs. Health professionals across the globe are already engaged in controlling the ongoing health crisis.

Home Insect Control Association (HICA), a non-profit making industry body promoting the safe use of household insecticides in India, has demanded a stop to buying or selling of mosquito repellent incense sticks (agarbattis) in Maharashtra as the majority of them are illegal and do not have necessary certification/licenses.

As per recent government data, 1,16,991 cases of dengue have been reported across the country in the last month. States like Maharashtra, Haryana, Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and New Delhi have seen a sharp increase in the cases.

People are protecting themselves from mosquitoes and are buying mosquito repellent incense sticks/ agarbatti available across chemists, pan shops, and Kirana stores. These incense sticks /agarbattis are sold at a cheap price and have a visible drop-down impact on mosquitoes yet are illegally made and sold without proper licenses and permissions from the relevant Government Department. Illegal & spurious incense sticks/agarbattis available in the market are laced with unapproved harmful chemicals (insecticides/ pesticides). This can cause health issues such as asthma, bronchitis, reactive airways disease, and other respiratory ailments. Basic checks on safety parameters that are mandatory for all home insecticide products are not carried out by these manufacturers producing the illegal agarbattis.

The mosquito repellent agarbattis are sold in the market under names like Relax, Comfort, Sleepwell, Just Relax, Relief, Natural Relax, among others. These incense sticks/agarbattis do not go through the regulated manufacturing and licensing processes. As per the provisions of the Insecticide Act 1968, all household insecticide products need to be approved by Central Insecticide Board (CIB) and the registration committee. Household Insecticide products are approved by the CIB after evaluating the toxicity and safety of the product to the consumers and animals before granting permissions.

Mr. Jayant Deshpande, Honorary Secretary, HICA, said, At a time when respiratory issues are occurring frequently, we strongly urge people to stop or avoid using mosquito repellent incense sticks. Most of them available in the market are illegal and have the potential to damage consumer health. Usage of illegal mosquito repellent agarbattis or incense with unknown combustible material can trigger asthma, bronchitis, reactive airways disease, and other respiratory ailments. These incense sticks/agarbattis do not go through regulatory checks and have chemicals exceeding prescribed levels. They are likely to contain banned or unapproved chemicals as well. While these incense sticks seem to be effective on mosquitoes, they will be equally harmful to people’s health.”

He further added, “In the last 3 years, we have conducted more than 50 raids across the country along with local authorities. While we are committed to protecting the interest of consumers, we recommend people to use only branded mosquito repellents and solutions which are approved by the licensing authorities. The licensing number starts with CIR No and mfg license no that is issued by Central Insecticide Board and Registration Committee (CIB-RC) and State Dept and mandatorily required to be displayed on packages. People buy mosquito incense sticks more because of their affordable cost. Today, the organized industry has innovated and introduced safe alternatives to incense sticks like paper-based mosquito repellent cards which are approved, effective, and cost as low as just INR 1 per usage.”

In India, close to 50% of mosquito repellents are in the burning format out of which, almost 30% are using unapproved and illegal mosquito repellent incense sticks. HICA has been working with the authorities for initiating strict action against manufacturers violating the licensing protocol of following certain safety parameters before the product is introduced in the market to consumers.

About Home Insect Control Association (HICA)

HICA is an organization established in 1995 to give impetus to the domestic Home Insecticides sector, to facilitate the members of the Association for the overall safety of the environment, and to educate the public about the healthy and proper use of home insecticides for a pest-free life, and to introduce self-regulation and governance by the member industry.

HICA cares to maintain and enhance the reputation of the insecticides industry and safeguard the business interests of its members by bringing to the notice of authorities cases of unauthorized & unrecognized suppliers who misrepresent and sell products of harmful nature to the hapless consumers.

The objective is to promote and stabilize measures in order to assist in the promotion of the safe use of insecticides in India and help in the development of the insecticides industry in the larger interest of the country.

MADURAI / November 9, 2021: India’s largest and only installation of advanced virtual care at Meenakshi Mission Hospital & Research Centre (MMHRC) in Madurai proved to be a gamechanger in Covid times by remotely connecting more than 40,000 patients, including both outpatients and inpatients, to doctors for treatment in the thick of the pandemic, significantly helping curb the spread of Coronavirus infection and improving health outcomes.

This is the first time that a hospital in India has deployed state-of-the-art virtual care robots that are being used in six of the world’s top ten hospitals. MMHRC acquired 16 self-driving robots from the US-based Teladoc Health, the global leader in whole-person virtual care in August last year to enable doctors to provide virtual care to patients when the Covid pandemic was raging.

Said Dr. S Gurushankar, Chairman of the 1,000-bed Meenakshi Mission Hospital & Research Centre at Madurai: “We decided to deploy Teladoc Health technology to enhance the diagnostic abilities of doctors and connect them with patients remotely. These devices empowered our doctors to treat patients anywhere, anytime by acting as their third eye, through which they could remotely access all parameters of patients. Since August last year, over 40,000 inpatients and outpatients have been treated at our hospital during and after the second wave of Covid using these robots. Over 3,500 of these were Covid-positive patients admitted to the Covid, ICU, and Emergency wards at our hospital. We managed to prevent thousands of potential cases of Coronavirus infection which may have occurred had there been face-to-face contact between patients and doctors in the critical months when the pandemic was at its peak. This helped save lives and reduce the burden on the healthcare infrastructure.”

Dr. S Gurushankar
Dr. S Gurushankar

Dr. S Gurushankar added: “These robots can collect and process data from other diagnostic equipment and present it to doctors to help them make clinical decisions. They enable as many as six specialists to come together remotely at the same time to treat and monitor a patient suffering from multiple complications. Specialists can cross-consult each other regarding a patient, and even consult remotely with doctors located in other countries like the US and the UK. At our hospital, we have integrated these robots with our USG, ECHO, Cathlab, and other diagnostic devices to monitor patient parameters. They are also connected with our Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) through which doctors can pull out the patient’s diagnostic reports. In the isolation ward, the patient’s attendants can check on them using these robots.”

Said Dr. Shayan Vyas, Senior Vice President, Teladoc Health, US: “Advanced virtual care increases the efficiency and independence of clinicians, while simultaneously improving safety measures for both clinicians and patients. With this technology, clinicians can visually examine patients remotely, which is immensely valuable during Covid-19 as it allows doctors to care for patients without putting themselves at risk or using PPE.

He added: “Virtual care acts as a ‘digital front door’ providing a guided journey through the healthcare system. It expands the capabilities of hospitals, removes geographical barriers, and enhances collaboration by doctors across specialties. It bridges the physical gap between healthcare professionals and patients, particularly in rural and underserved communities, and brings specialist expertise to areas lacking it. It reduces the need for patients and clinicians to travel and increases the number of patients a single doctor can see in a day. In near future, we will see this technology flow from episodic, acute care to ongoing monitoring of chronic conditions, wellness and prevention, mental health, and more. Advanced, whole-person virtual care can be a transformative and equalizing force in healthcare access in an underserved country like India.”

Teladoc Health robots are considered the world’s most advanced robotic telemedicine platform. These robots have been installed in 6 of the 10 world’s best hospitals including Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Charite Universitatsmedizin (Berlin), and Sheba Medical Centre (Israel).

Sakra World Hospital Commemorates World Stroke Day with Walkathon, Free Stroke Check-Up Camps and launching a Stroke Clinic

Bengaluru, October 29, 2021: Observing World Stroke Day on October 29, Sakra World Hospital, one of the leading healthcare providers in Bengaluru and India’s first FDI hospital, organized a walkathon to raise awareness on stroke and a free stroke check-up camp for its employees and the public on October 29 and 30, 2021. Sakra World Hospital is also geared up to flag off its Comprehensive Stroke Clinic on October 30 at 8:30 AM that would offer complete stroke care services with an aim to effectively diagnose, treat, manage and prevent stroke and other stroke-related severities in the presence of Dr. Pratima Murthy, Director of National Institute Of Mental Health And Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru.

The walkathon that began at the wee hours of the morning at 7:00 AM from Sakra World Hospital towards Kadubeesanahalli Bridge and back to the hospital had 150 participating employees followed by a screening of the employees and others for stroke risk factors like cardiac problems, hypertension, diabetes, and lipid disorders at the free stroke check-up camp in the hospital.

Elaborating on the need to raise awareness about stroke, Dr. Shiva Kumar. R, Senior Consultant Neurologist & Epileptologist said, “We organized the walkathon to raise awareness about the need to identify symptoms of stroke, act quickly and arrange medical intervention without any delay. This would help people act faster and save their loved ones from death or a possible disability. On the other hand, at the stroke camp, our focus was on personal habits which increase the risk of stroke-like smoking, alcohol, and drug abuse. We had a calculator to assess the risk of stroke in an individual for risk stratification. The camp also covered stroke screening health packages like Carotid Doppler, MRI Brain with Angiogram, CT Angiogram, Specific blood tests for identifying the mechanism of stroke and the root cause. On prior appointments, we offered free neurology consultations and discount on stroke screening packages at the two-days-long camp.”

Both the walkathon and the free check-up camp were conducted by strictly adhering to the Covid-19 protocols like prior appointments, compulsory wearing of masks and appropriate seating arrangements, and distance maintenance.

Stroke, as we all know, is a very common problem and can be treated and cured efficiently in the early stages. In the case of stroke, time plays a crucial role as the first 4.5 hours following an ischemic stroke is the golden period for administering ‘clot buster’ medication which is life-saving. Beyond the first 4.5 hours, treating options become limited, and mechanical clot removal (thrombectomy) can be tried for up to 24 hours in selected cases. Stroke can affect anyone across all age groups and can be almost completely recovered with effective medications and rehabilitation.

Keeping the importance of timely intervention in case of treating stroke, Sakra’s Stroke Clinic comes with a wide range of stroke care services including:

  • Adult and pediatric Stroke OPD
  • Stroke Screening – Primary prevention and secondary prevention
  • Lifestyle modifications and diet counseling for stroke risk reduction
  • Intervention Neurology – Angiogram, Thrombectomy, Endarterectomy
  • Stroke rehabilitation

Mr. Yuichi Nagano, Managing Director, Sakra World Hospital, said“While stroke could lead to severe consequences on the brain, it is both curable and preventable. Knowing the importance of time and the signs of the stroke, it could be kept at bay. The Stroke Clinic at Sakra World Hospital comes with high-end technology and aims at providing seamless and timely intervention to those with stroke and prevent further adverse impact on one’s brain and body.”

Kerala, October 8, 2021: Acceleration of COVID-19 transmission through various religious gatherings has been observed in many places in India. It is necessary to adopt and follow strict mitigation measures, otherwise, the festive season can turn out to be a super spreading event which eventually may prove to be a burden on the healthcare system. As per Dr. Merlin Moni, Associate Professor, Division of Infectious disease, Department of Internal Medicine, Amrita Hospitals, Kochi, COVID 19 transmission dynamics is closely related to the 3 Cs:

  • CLOSED SPACES with poor airflow
  • CROWDED PLACES
  • CLOSE CONTACT settings with face-to-face contact

Talking about managing mass gatherings, Dr. Moni said, “Some of the upcoming mass gathering events such as ‘Navaratri’, ‘Durga Puja’, ‘Dussehra’ etc. will need comprehensive strategic planning in organizing them in the current pandemic situation and a collective decision will need to be taken in the form of a consensus from key stakeholders such as policymakers, representatives from religious organizations as well as experts. In this context, it is essential to formulate and implement strict standard operating procedures on preventive measures for containment of the spread of COVID 19 during the festivals. The logistics of the festivals including the expected number of people, dates and the potential barriers to control the crowd needs to be discussed with the local government and health authorities.”

SOME USEFUL TIPS:

According to Dr. Moni the following guidelines for religious places of worship during festival times
and elaborate administrative and general preventive measures can help keep safe from the spread
of Coronavirus:

  • No festival-related events should be allowed in containment zones
  • All gatherings in connection with upcoming major religious events such as Dussehra, Durga
Puja, Vidyarambham, etc. should focus on maintaining a relatively safe cluster participation
    and limited participants
  •  All vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, children, geriatric age groups, and
immunosuppressed individuals should not attend public religious activities
  • Unvaccinated individuals should be encouraged to avoid gatherings.
  • Norms related to the maximum number of permitted persons to celebrate the festival in every
the setting must comply with the existing state government guidelines

ADVISORY

  • On arrival at religious settings and while attending festivals, all visitors must wash/sanitize their hands frequently
  • Maintaining a physical distance of 6 feet wherever possible and always wearing face masks properly is a must
  • Double masking must be followed, and local government authorities should be deployed to ensure adherence
  • Under any circumstances, symptomatic visitors must not be allowed for darshan and attending the festivals
  • If any of the visitors experience any COVID-like symptoms, viz., fever, cough, etc, they should immediately contact the medical teams stationed there
  • Authorities must ensure that no dining should be promoted inside religious settings. In unavoidable cases, appropriate physical distancing must be followed

  • Every 600 liters per minute (LPM) plant can support a 150+ bedded hospital and comes with a 1-year warranty and 2-year extended annual maintenance plan
  • Oxygen generation plants are being established in Government hospitals in Pune, Ratnagiri, and Solapur in Maharashtra, and in Karnataka, Haryana, and Uttarakhand

Pune, India, October 6, 2021  Honeywell Hometown Solutions India Foundation (HHSIF), the philanthropic arm of Honeywell, a Fortune 100 company, today announced it is setting up 10 oxygen generation plants of 600 liters per minute (LPM) capacity in government hospitals across India. In Maharashtra, these plants are being set up in Pune, Ratnagiri, and Solapur districts to support healthcare infrastructure in preparation for an anticipated third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The first such plant was inaugurated today at Late Droupadabai Murlidhar Khedekar Hospital, Bopodi, Pune.

“Honeywell is pleased to partner with the government to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the collective efforts to manage patient care during the pandemic,” said Ashish Gaikwad, President, Honeywell India. “Timely and adequate oxygen supply can help save lives and is an essential medical aid for COVID-19 patients. We are pleased to announce the setting up of 10 oxygen generation plants of 600 liters per minute (LPM) each in remote districts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Haryana, and Uttarakhand to enable inclusive healthcare for all.”

This initiative is a part of HHSIF’s commitment to set up 10 oxygen generation plants under the supervision of Americares, across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Haryana, and Uttarakhand.

“Honeywell’s support has been focused and timely. These oxygen generation plants will help save lives during the COVID-19 crisis and will serve to improve the quality of critical care at the government health facilities for years to come,” said Shripad Desai, MD and Country Director, Americares.

Each plant has a capacity to generate 600 LPM, enough to cater to the needs of a hospital with more than 150 intensive care units (ICU) beds. The oxygen generated onsite will be directly supplied to hospital beds, including those in ICUs. Honeywell is also funding the annual maintenance contracts of these plants for two years to ensure they function smoothly after the one-year warranty period has lapsed.

The oxygen generation plant in Pune was inaugurated in the presence of several government officials including Mr. Murlidhar Mohol, Mayor, Pune; Ms. Sunita Wadekar, Deputy Mayor, Pune; Mr. Vikram Kumar, IAS, Commissioner, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC); and Mr. Hemant Rasne, Standing Committee Chairman, PMC.

“The Pune Municipal Corporation has been actively working on a contingency plan for a possible third wave. In the last few months, we have received great support from Honeywell in helping our efforts to contain the pandemic and enhance the healthcare infrastructure through multiple actions like setting up COVID Care Centers, oxygen concentrators, and medical supplies. We are pleased with the latest support of setting up an oxygen generation plant for the Pune hospital that helps with a sustainable solution for the long term,” said Mr. Murlidhar Mohol, Mayor, Pune. He further added, “It is thoughtful of Honeywell Hometown Solutions India Foundation to help Pune become self-reliant in the fight against the pandemic.”

Elaborating on the same, Mr. Vikram Kumar (IAS), Commissioner, Pune Municipal Corporation, shared, “As we know, the city has been the worst hit due to heavy caseload of pandemic and we are continuously fighting to strengthen our healthcare infrastructure. We have been well supported by Honeywell and they have done some exemplary work in the last few months to support us in our endeavor to build better healthcare infrastructure. The oxygen generation plant donated by Honeywell has helped in bringing life-saving oxygen supply to patients in Pune.”

The second wave of the pandemic put immense pressure on the country’s healthcare infrastructure. The government has put in place a multi-fold strategy in anticipation of a third wave.[1] Honeywell, through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, is helping the government build healthcare capacities. Earlier, HHSIF set up COVID care centers in Nainital, Gurugram, Delhi, and Pune, and established 10-bed ICUs in Mumbai and Bengaluru. The company also donated 1,000 oxygen concentrators, 10 ventilators, 10,000 N95 respirators, and 2,500 PPE kits to various government and private hospitals across the country.

Honeywell partnered with the Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) and with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–Indian Institute of Petroleum (CSIR–IIP), to supply molecular sieve adsorbents (zeolites) to accelerate the setting up of Medical Oxygen Plants (MOP) in the country.

In Maharashtra, specifically, Honeywell set up an ICU facility at the Dahisar COVID-19 Jumbo Centre in Mumbai and established a 20-bed COVID care center at the Employees State Insurance Corporation Hospital in Bibwewadi, Pune. Honeywell also donated 120 oxygen concentrators, ventilators, N95 respirators, and PPE kits in the state.
