Pune,  24th November 2020:  Vascon Engineers, one of Pune’s leading real estate players in association with one of Pune’s premier institutes, College of Engineering Pune (COEP), have collaborated for setting up a Research and Development Centre to provide future engineers with the latest knowledge required in the field of construction.

The proposed R Vasudevan Centre of R&D, housed in the Vascon Civil EngineeringBuilding, shall aim to bridge the gap between what civil engineers’ study in classroom academics and the kind of expertise that is actually required in the real-world, in turn reducing gestation periods of professionals entering the industry.

The Vascon-COEP association is the need of the hour, as the recent report by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors shows that there is a demand-supply gap ranging between 82% and 86% of skilled civil engineers, architects and others. This means our country needs 4 million skilled civil engineers until next year. Such an understanding between a leading private player and an institute of repute will help companies save on the cost of training manpower as the graduates are deployment-ready.

The latest industry know-how shall be imparted by top practitioners in the field of construction and academia, carefully selected by the management of Vascon and COEP. The centre shall provide such training on the basis of various live projects keeping in mind each project’s final objective and shall be supervised directly by the head of the centre to successfully meet these objectives. One of the main objectives is also to work on innovative yet practical solutions to benefit the industry at large. The Centre will also focus on promoting training the latest technologies and equipment needed by the industry.

Vascon Engineering Partner with College of Engineering Pune(COEP)

All students of COEP in the civil engineering department shall be eligible to work on such projects.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Siddharth Vasudevan – Managing Director, Vascon Engineers Ltd said, “We, at Vascon are proud to be associated with a premier institute like COEP and the bright minds associated with it. Infrastructure and Construction is a crucial sector for the Indian economy. Over the years, we have witnessed that transformational changes are built on the foundation of innovation and academic linkages. Our partnership with COEP and setting up of the R Vasudevan Centre of R&D aims to provide a robust platform for academia and industry to interact and innovate and co-create newer technologies for the construction industry. As we all know professionals, across sectors, who join the industry fresh out of colleges require additional exposure and training to become industry-ready. Hence, one of the main objectives of R&D Centre is to reduce this gestation period and equip students with the latest and industry-ready knowledge that they will be able to use as soon as they are out of college.”

Dr. B B Ahuja, Director, College of Engineering Pune said, “We are pleased to be associated with one of Pune’s leading real estate players, setting up of the R Vasudevan Centre of R&D is a one of kind partnership to equip our students to be industry-ready and have an edge over others. We are focused on creating an industry-relevant curriculum in a fast-evolving ecosystem, this partnership with Vascon is a significant step in this direction.”.

Online Education for Children

Bangalore, 17 November 2020:  Azim Premji University released its Field Study on ‘Myths of Online Education’s Bangalore today. The report is available online at the University’s website.

The study was undertaken in 5 states across 26 districts covering 1,522schools. These public schools have more than 80,000 students. The objective of the study was to understand the experience of children and teachers with online education.

The study finds an overwhelming majority of the teachers and parents stating that the online mode is inadequate and ineffective for education. The study also reveals that most parents are eager to send their children to schools with necessary health safeguards and do not think that the health of their children would be affected in such an event.

‘Online education is ineffective because of the basic character of education, and not merely because of the lack of access to the net and online resources, especially for school-age children. Education requires physical presence, attention, thought, and emotions, all to be sewn towards learning goals, step-by-step, often back-and-forth, and differently for each student. This requires intense verbal and non-verbal interactions amongst teachers and students, which is possible only in actual classes.’ said Anurag Behar, Vice-Chancellor, Azim Premji University.

Rahul Mukhopadhyay and Aanchal Choral, from the research team that conducted the study, noted that “the study revealed the ineffectiveness of remote learning solutions in providing meaningful learning opportunities, exclusion of the majority of children due to poor access, and the professional frustration of teachers.”

The key findings of the study are:

  1. Online education is ineffective: Teachers shared their professional frustration of conducting online classes. More than 80% of teachers expressed the impossibility of maintaining an emotional connection with children during such classes, thus eliminating the very basis of education, and more than 90% of teachers felt that no meaningful assessment of children’s learning was possible during online classes. Parents have echoed this sentiment with almost 70% being of the opinion that online classes are not effective for the learning of their children.
  2. Inadequate access: More than 60% of children cannot access online education opportunities; reasons for this include non-availability of or an inadequate number of smartphones for dedicated use or sharing, and difficulty in using the apps for online learning. The issue of access is further exacerbated for children with disabilities; 90% of teachers with children with disabilities in their regular classes found them unable to participate in online classes.
  3. Parents’ overwhelming support to reopen schools: Almost 90% of parents are willing to send their children to school if the health of their children is taken care of when schools reopen.

The report underlines the urgent need to reopen schools in a phased manner with appropriate precautions for the health and well-being of both children and teachers. In the interim period, teachers could be encouraged to facilitate community-based solutions for direct interactions with children with all necessary precautions.
